Outpatient Diabetes Education
The Outpatient Diabetes Education program at Centennial Medical Center is under the direction of the Clinical Nutrition Program. Both of the Certified Diabetes Educators are members of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and provide diabetes self-management under the scope of practice for diabetes educators and include the AADE 7 self-management skill set: healthy eating, exercise, blood glucose monitoring, medication management, healthy coping, problem solving and reducing risks.
The program is individualized, with one-on-one appointments for type 1, type 2, gestational diabetes, non-diabetic hypoglycemia, and metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes.
Hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar)
It is estimated that over 18 million people are diabetic and only half of them know it.
Symptoms: Increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurry vision, irritability, and headaches are common symptoms associated with diabetes.
Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar)
Low Blood Sugar can be a side effect of medications taken to stimulate the production of insulin by the pancreas. Skipping meals, going too long between meals, vigorous exercise without supplementing with snacks, and alcohol can contribute to a Low Blood Sugar reaction.
Symptoms: Fast heartbeat, weakness, sweating,
